My first impression of vincent neil emerson
When I first listened to Vincent New Emerson’s music I felt pure joy- joy in the simple fact that he existed and modern-day classic country was still being made. When I say “classic,” I don’t mean classic-sounding. I mean authentic. For those of us who truly love country, we know within a single verse if the person is legit or if they’re simply phoning it in. Vincent is legit; no simpler way to put it.
In late 2021, Vincent came to my house and stayed with my wife and I for a few days. We even played some music together and I embarrassed myself with my shitty harmonica playing. He fixed the pre-amp on my brother’s broken Martin with some plumbers putty and a wrench. I listened to him FaceTime, as many times as he possibly could with our jam-packed schedule, his girlfriend. He gratefully ate Hayley’s cooking and we drank all the Coors in my fridge.
Vincent carries no fancy air or higher-than-thou quality with him. He reminded me of a friend I went to high school with. He’s just a Texas boy who loves playing music and sharing himself with others. I had a feeling that he could have a conversation with anyone I brought in the room.
In the past, I have seen musicians attempt to act in their own videos and they are so used to playing a “version” of themselves in real life that pretending to be another version of themselves in a music video is simply something they can’t wrap their head around. It’s almost as if they forget how to be human. There’s this compelling phrase that I think of often and it perfectly summarizes my first impressions of Vincent Neil Emerson: It’s a wonderful thing to wake up and not have to figure out who you are.
